Accessibility enhancements for the 'Starkers' theme

Well it has only been a year and I am back. I have shamefully neglected my promises to help Al with the accessibility enhancements to the Starkers theme (I have been a little busy, new job, moved twice etc …). But excuses aside I have upgraded my blog to the latest version of WordPress and updated to the latest starkers theme, so I guess it is time to crack on.

Al already had some ideas for how we could add a style sheet switcher. He pointed me in the direction of the ‘Invasion of the Body Switchers’ style sheet switcher articles at A List Apart and brothercake. I was originally thinking of developing our own style sheet switcher, but the iotbs version does a fine job, so I have added it to this blog. I think there could be ways of making it less obtrusive both in code and appearance so we will be investigating some options. We may also wish to add more accessibility features and bundle these into an accessibility tool bar or something similar.

After visiting the Shaw Trust, to see some accessibility testing, Al Stevens and I came up with the idea of making our Wordpress blogs more accessible. Al had used Elliot Jay Stocks Starkers theme as a starting point for his blog and it seemed like a good place to start. We think that Starkers is a great starting point for any designers or developers building their own style or theme for Wordpress and I imagine it is being widely adopted by this community. If Starkers came with some accessible features built in, then designers and developers could benefit by not having to think too much about accessibility, but more importantly their users would benefit greatly.
